Keira rolled into Emily’s at the same time as the director. Haley’s assistant and seven Barkville volunteers were already mingling when they came through the back door. Offering her spacious home as a meeting place and inviting the jumble of mixed personalities had been a great move, Keira thought.

In its third year, the tensions of planning the perfect event had eased from stress-snapping to something close to a social occasion. A glass of wine smoothed the edges of agitation, and finger snacks tempered hungry bellies before the meeting began.

“Helen! So glad you could make it,” Emily greeted the new arrival. Helen Miller, board member, and financial supporter, attended their meetings whenever she could. “Pour yourself some,” Emily pointed to the open bottles on the island.

And then it was all business.

“This year’s Mutt Strut will be bigger and better than last year. The park is the ideal location for our growing event. It’s powering up, and we’re expecting donations to exceed last year by at least twenty percent.” Haley smiled at the interrupting cheers.

“Entrance fees for our 5K Mutt Strut are streaming in, and since it’s an all-day event, income from vendor fees alone has doubled.”

“That might be so, Haley, but Carter Nash & his band are not playing for free,” the accountant pointed out. He hadn’t been in favor of throwing money away on a live band, but the committee members outvoted him. His pulled together eyebrows showed he still was unconvinced that a live-band was a great investment.

“True.” Keira piped in, saving Haley from uttering a snarly comment. “Though they gave us an awesome discount. They’re local, if you consider Louisville that, but their name draws a decent crowd.”

“Never heard of them,” the accountant mumbled loud enough to make his displeasure known.

“People will show up to get autographs and pictures.”

“Keira’s right,” Haley picked up. “Mutt Strut leads off with a 5k walk, but the police dog demo, the best-dressed dog competition, the kiddie games, vendors, the band, and let’s not forget our adoptable pets—they will draw folks. And the people will donate.”

“We need donation buckets on shepherd’s hooks between vendors, by the bandstand, and in volunteers’ hands. Harold has plenty of plain white ones we can use. I’ve ordered decals with the Barkville Rescue logo to go on it. At my expense.” Helen shot a pointed look at the accountant.

“It’s coming together, except we need more volunteers.” Haley twisted the top of a water bottle and sipped. “We need folks to sell raffle tickets, handlers for our adoptable pets, and we should have a few eyes on the donation buckets. Please everyone—ask, plead, beg, or whatever you need to do to get your friends, neighbors, or co-workers to donate a few hours of their time.”

“Hey, mom is running another piece on the Mutt Strut on Friday. I’ll ask her to put out a volunteer call.” Keira glanced at her phone, checking the time, and caught Emily’s eyes.

“Great meeting, everyone, but I’ve got to go,” Keira excused herself and stood.
